The PSA Nature Division offers two Print sections for the 2018 PSA International:

  (1) Nature section
(2) Wildlife section

All entries in the Nature section must conform to the Nature Definition given below.

All entries in the Wildlife section must conform to the Nature Definition given below and the Wildlife Definition given below.

All valid acceptances in each Nature Print section are eligible for Nature Star Ratings subject to the requirements of the PSA Nature Division and for listing in PSA Who's Who in Photography. The target acceptance rate will be between 30% and 36% in each section.

The exhibition is open to anyone; however, an entry may be rejected when the sponsoring organization or its agent, in its reasonable discretion, believes the entry does not conform to the exhibition rules and conditions.

An entrant’s images will not be presented to the judges consecutively. An entrant’s four images will be distributed throughout four rounds of judging for that section. Distribution of images shall be in the same round order as submitted by the entrant

Images will be judged using a 15 point scoring system (2-5 points/judge).

A person may submit a maximum of four (4) prints in each print section of this exhibition and all work must be the work of that same person. Verified multiple submittals by and/or for the same person in the same section will cause all images in all sections of this exhibition for that person to be disqualified. Any acceptances and any additional awards will be revoked with all entry fees retained.

All prints must be shipped flat and unmounted.

No prints will be returned to the maker. All prints will be destroyed after the Exhibition. No signature is required. You agree to this condition by submitting an entry.

Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation.
The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality.
Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in situations depicting natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves.
Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals permissible.
Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement.
No techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted.
Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content, or without altering the content of the original scene, are permitted including HDR, focus stacking and dodging/burning.
Techniques that remove elements added by the camera, such as dust spots, digital noise, and film scratches, are allowed.
  Stitched images are not permitted.
All final images must appear natural.
Color images can be converted to greyscale monochrome.
Infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations, are not allowed.

Images entered in Nature sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above can have landscapes, geologic formations, weather phenomena, and extant organisms as the primary subject matter. This includes images taken with the subjects in controlled conditions, such as zoos, game farms, enclosures that make the subjects dependent on man for food, and botanical gardens.

PLEASE NOTE: Human elements are not limited to people in the image. Objects made by humans, such as roads, fences, signs, power lines, cell towers and buildings (or parts of buildings), are also considered human elements, as are domestic animals. Jesses and thongs on legs of raptors and other birds are considered human elements, not scientific banding, and are therefore included in this restriction. Sensor dust on digital captures and rounded corners of scanned images are not considered pictorial elements and may be removed. HDR and Focus Stacking techniques are also allowed provided the results appear natural to the judges. Stitched Panoramic images are not allowed.

Images entered in Wildlife sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above are further defined as one or more extant zoological or botanical organisms free and unrestrained in a natural or adopted habitat.
Landscapes, geologic formations, photographs of zoo or game farm animals, or of any extant zoological or botanical species taken under controlled conditions are not eligible in Wildlife sections.
Wildlife is not limited to animals, birds and insects. Marine subjects and botanical subjects (including fungi and algae) taken in the wild are suitable wildlife subjects, as are carcasses of extant species.

The maker’s name and/or the image title must not be in the image area or in any other area visible to the judges of any digital files, slides or prints. This includes copyrights.

An image (or a nearly identical in-camera duplicate) previously accepted in any PSA International Nature Division section, regardless of media, is not eligible for entry in any Nature Division Projected or Print section of the 2018 PSA International.

An image previously accepted in any PSA Recognized Exhibition may not be retitled and submitted in any PSA Recognized Exhibition or in the PSA International with the new title.

Informative Note: PSA Recognized Exhibitions are not "THE" PSA International Exhibition. Images accepted in PSA Recognized Exhibitions but not in a past Nature section of the PSA International Exhibition may be submitted in the Nature Division sections of the 2018 PSA International provided they meet the Nature Definitions.

A given image may be entered in only one section of the 2018 PSA International regardless of Division or Media.
All acceptances of that image will be revoked if multiple acceptances of the same image are discovered after judging.

While PSA considers a color version and a monochrome version of the same image capture different images, color versions and monochrome versions from the same capture are considered the same image for this restriction.

Entries must originate as photographs (image-captures of object via light sensitivity) made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his/her own and permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This will include the Exhibition (audio-visual program) of the accepted images to be shown at the 2018 PSA Conference, low resolution posting of accepted images on a web site and may include use in the PSA Journal. Images where entrants do not give this permission will be declined and entry fees forfeited.

The exhibition assumes no liability of any misuse of copyright. All final work must be on photographic film, or on electronic file, or on photographic or electronic print material, mounting excepted. Images may be altered, either digitally or otherwise, by the entrant subject to Divisional restrictions.

An online Nature Division PDF Catalog listing all acceptances in all four Nature Sections of the 2018 PSA International Exhibition is included with your entry fee. You can download the catalog using a link on the Exhibition Web Site You can save the Catalog as an electronic file and/or print it out. This Catalog will contain the same information that will be provided to the Nature Division Star Ratings Directors. It will include color reproductions of the medal winning images. Printed hard copies of the Catalogs will not be mailed to the entrants.

All entrants winning medals in either Nature Print section will be asked to submit high quality jpeg digital versions of their winning prints for inclusion in the Nature Division Catalog and posting on the PSA Exhibition web site.

  Diversity Award
To be eligible for either Diversity Award, an entrant must have three acceptances that show diversity in subject
matter by each of the three qualifying acceptances being a different subject category. At least one of the images
must score above the minimum acceptance score for the set to be considered.

For the purposes of this award, the Nature Division has established eleven subject categories as follows:
(1) General (Weather, Geology, etc.) (7) Landscapes/Seascapes
(2) Amphibians (8) Mammals
(3) Birds (9) Marine
(4) Botany (10) Mullosks
(5) Fungi (11) Reptiles
(6) Insects
At least three of these categories must be represented in your acceptances.

You must designate the subject category for each image yourself when submitting your entry. If you do not select a
category yourself, the Exhibition will not select a category for you. The Exhibition reserves the right to change a
category selection that is not correct, such as selecting Bird for a Mammal image.
Not selecting a category will not affect acceptances but will affect the awards you are eligible for.

By entering this exhibition, you are explicitly consenting to the personal details you have supplied, including email addresses, being held, processed, and used by the exhibition organizers for purposes associated with this exhibition. You also explicitly consent to such information being sent to organizations that have accorded official recognition, patronage, or accreditation to this exhibition. You acknowledge and accept that entering this exhibition means the status and results of your entry may be made public. Email addresses and contact information will not be made public.

If at any time, it is determined in the reasonable discretion of the exhibition organizer or the judges before, during, or after the judging of an exhibition that an entrant has submitted entries where one or more images may fail to comply with these Conditions of Entry, including the stated definitions, the exhibition organizers reserve the right to delete the entry from the exhibition and void any or all acceptances or awards in connection with the exhibition. Fees may be forfeited or refunded in these circumstances. The entrant acknowledges that the decision of the exhibition organizers or the judges is final.

In order to ensure that images comply with the Conditions of Entry and definitions, the exhibition organizers may carry out reasonable measures to verify that:
    a) the images are the original work of the entrant and
    b) the images comply with the rules and definitions as set out in these Conditions of Entry.
These steps include, but are not limited to, questioning any entrant, requiring the submission of RAW files or other digital files representing the original capture of the submitted image(s), confronting the entrant with evidence that one or more submitted images fails to comply with the Conditions of Entry (also known as Entry Rules), and offering the entrant a reasonable opportunity to provide counter evidence to refute the exhibition organizer’s evidence by a set deadline. Such entries that are not cleared or are still questionable after the entrant has presented evidence may be considered in breach of these Conditions of Entry, and declined. Such entries may be referred to PSA for further investigation of possible ethics violations.

PSA retains the right to investigate in any way all complaints/suspicions of breaches of entry conditions, impose sanctions if deemed necessary, void the acceptances of any image found to violate the PSA rules, include the entrant’s name on the list of sanctions provided to Exhibitions, and share such investigations with FIAP. Entrants automatically agree to these terms by the act of entering the Exhibition and agree to cooperate with any investigation.

WARNING: An entry received from an exhibitor under sanction by PSA at the time of entry will not be included in the judging and the entry fees will be forfeited.

Each Image must have a unique title. Once an image has been accepted in any PSA Recognized Exhibition, regardless of section or Division, that same image, or a like “in camera” or a “reproduction” duplicate of that image may not be retitled if used in any other PSA Recognized Exhibition. Words such as "Untitled" and "No Title" are not acceptable as part or all of an image's title, nor are camera capture filenames.

Titles will be read aloud during judging. It is recommended all entries, including land and seascapes, have descriptive titles that enhance the story telling value of the photographs. Cute titles and incorrectly identified subjects may hurt your score. Your name must NOT be part of the title.

Please limit titles to 35 characters including spaces and punctuation. The Entry Form software will clip any excess characters resulting in an incomplete title for inclusion in the Catalog. This will cause problems when applying for Star Ratings.

In addition to the title, the back of each print must have the name and address of the entrant in a position that clearly indicates the top of the print from the rear. Only pressure sensitive (self-adhesive) labels may be used for titles, names and addresses on the backs of unmounted prints to prevent bleed-through of the ink. The titles on the backs of the prints must match the titles on the Entry Form.

Prints may not exceed 20 inches or the metric equivalent (508mm) in the longest dimension or 16 inches or the metric equivalent (406mm) in the shortest dimension. Metric A2 size is not acceptable. All nature prints in one section will be judged together, with small prints (8-1/2" x 12" and smaller) being judged before large prints (over 8-1/2" x 12").

Selected * prints, including all award winners, will be dispayed at the 2018 PSA International Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah between October 2, 2018 and October 5, 2018.

*Space constraints may prevent showing all accepted Nature Prints at the Conference. All award winners will be shown. Accepted images not included in the show will still get full credit towards Nature Division Star Ratings and Who's Who listing and will be listed in the Nature Division PDF Online catalog.
