Lip-Seng Tan, HonPSA, MPSA·


Tan Lip Seng was born in Singapore and took up photography when he was twelve years old. Now retired, he spent his career practicing medical photography with the Department of Medicine and the Department of Paediatrics at the National University of Singapore. Outside his career, he gained local recognition when he was awarded with the Cultural Medallion for Photography in 1985. In the first Ngee Ann Photographic Art Exhibition held in 2005, he was named as Photographer of the Year by the Ngee Ann Cultural Center.

He has been a member of PSA since 1967 and received his APSA in 1994. In 1997, he was awarded an EPSA and was the first in Asia to obtain this distinction. He has been the PSA International Representative in Singapore since 1997. In 1998, he was awarded the PSA Country Representative of the Year. At the 1998 PSA Orlando Conference, he presented “Creative Montage with Color Transparencies” and the “PSA Best of Singapore Slide Collection.”  At the 1999 PSA Toronto Conference, he received his FPSA, the first Singaporean to receive this honour. In 2011, he received the MPSA. A long-time Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (1970), he was awarded the Fenton Medal and Honorary Life Member in 1998. He received his HonPSA in 2015.

His works are collected and housed permanently by several museums. He was one of the photographers featured by the Singapore Post for the Singapore Today 2008 National Day Celebration stamp issue. In 2009, he presented a solo exhibition of nearly 400 prints showcasing his photography for more than half a century. These images were also published in a book portfolio. Photo travel is one of his specialties.
