Review by commentator Dan C.

A well-done image of Apis florea going about its business of eating nectar.  The lack of pollen on its legs indicates it is freshly out of its open hive on this particular food run.  Your image nicely shows the coloration of this small wild honeybee and shows its feeding behavior.  The behavior lets me assign a nature score of 3.

Technically the image is sharp where it needs to be sharp and the exposure is spot on.  This results in a technical score of 3.

Pictorially the image would be stronger flipped horizontally.  That places more emphasis on the bee and makes the out of focus portions of the plant less of a problem and less likely to take my attention away from the bee.  I can only score a 2 for the pictorial score.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
The image fits the story perfectly.

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The level of detail and crispness to the bee itself is fantastic! I really like the depth of field capturing the single focal point on the main subject. Great shot!

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Everything is framed great. The bee is slightly off center, which I believe grabs my attention more. Awesome composition!

NATURE SCORE 3-Nature story strong

TECHNICAL SCORE 3-Excellent exposure

PICTORIAL SCORE 3-Excellent composition and impact

EXTRA POINT 1-Exceptional

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
It is a portrait anyway.

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Unbelievable sharp macro for such a long shutter hand held. Good DOF, that whole bee is in focus.

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
I would prefer bee not looking out of the photo although the flower would be cut. It seems, that image was rotated slightly, because black spots don't hang vertical.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
I think this is a good capture of a bee going about its work. Not a particularly strong story but not particularly weak. I’d give it a 2.5 thus.

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The bee and the two flowers are in nice sharp focus and the background is well done, but I’m left wishing more of the flowers/stalk were in also in focus. Especially that tiny bit of drama of a dropping pod in the very center of the image. I think if you had opened up your depth of field more, the overall ima ge would be improved.

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
I’m big on composition to draw the eye across and for me this image could be improved significantly and also avoid my above mentioned technical issues by changing it to a portrait crop. Right now with the bee slightly off-center and the falling pod, my eyes ends up going everywhere and no where, but if you could change it to a portrait with the bee mostly in the center and if you have a tiny bit more empty space in the bottom for that falling pod to move towards, I think the composition would be greatly improved while negating much of the short DOF issues.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
Bee sucking nectar of the flower is a good nature story but is commonly found. Although the story revolves around the bee sucking nectar from the flower by its proboscis which is hardly visible due to the poor aperture choice (f5.6) made. What I presume you concentrated on the bee and its pollen basket more and which is why the choice was made but as a result the nature story is not that deftly covered and it turned more into a portrait shot and which is why it is marked 2.

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Te chnically I would expect much better shot from you as your gear is evidently capable of delivering much better shot than this. First the use of low aperture is not solicited in a macro shot. Secondly the use of a single flashlight creates ugly highlights which are clearly being shown on its abdomen, forewings and on the eye which are highly glossy surfaces. Also the wider aperture creates a feeling that the bee is floating on the flower which is not helping the story at all in my consideration. Since you shot keeping the bee in a parallel plain the entire bee is in sharp focus and the differential between the bee and the background is good.
What you needed is a narrower aperture which would help you show the proboscis clearly and you needed to control the background flower highlights of the proboscis which would elevate your story better.

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
pictorially I would not recommend flipping of the image but rather use more straight angle slightly to your left would have helped.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
A quality image of a bee taking nectar. You don't say what lens or zoom setting in mm you used, which would have been interesting to understand how far away you were. Clear nature story, well done.

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Very sharp and clear for the bee and enough of the plant. I would try to tone down further the brightest bit of the plant top left - but still worth top points technically.

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Again a pleasing image to enjoy looking at and round the fra me, with extra interest with a couple of seed heads (?) dropping off through the actions of the bee. I do wonder is more room above the bee by making the image square or near thereto - but still worth a 3 again.
