2019-20 PPD POM

December 2019 PPD Print of the Month (POM)

Helen Herbert, of Maryport, Cumbria UK, wins for the second time with the First Place Star Color Sycamore Tree.

The judge, Jon Fishback, APSA, tells us that “We all know that fads and tricks come and go, and before they leave us one can become very bored with them. In this case the maker has use the technique of desaturation. The difference between this and the average person using this fad, is that, to me, this is how it should be used, it works.

The maker has used selective desaturation, not for itself, but as a tool, only one tool as an adjunct to the creation of this beautiful image. I spread all 32 images in rows of five and this one jumped out of the group at first glance.

If one were to start with the sky it might seem lifeless, to me that is how it must be to support the foreground. The beautiful tree in the center of that exciting curved composition, needs no help from the sky. All foreground element support the tree, it is alive. It will live with me for a long time, something I cannot say of many photographs.

The only help I might give this image is to make it 16X20.”
