Fifty-one entries to this year’s competition vied for the two top awards: The Arthur P. Henricks, Jr. Memorial Award for Best of Show and the Director’s Choice Award for the favorite of the Director. In addition there were special trophies for the top three winners in each of the three divisions: Chapters/Councils, Small Clubs and Large Clubs. All of the Honorable Mentions and the Special Highlight Awards received certificates of merit.
Usually, there are three judges for each category with the Chapter/Council and the Small Club divisions judged by the same three judges, who in this instance were Renee Pierce of Baton Rouge, Douglas Wade of Newhall, CA and Rich Bickham of Gary, Illinois. The large club division was judged by Colin Butterworth of Tasmania, Dawn Dingee of Dover Plains, NY, Peter Christoph of Massachusetts, and Joan Field, APSA of Danville, CA. Plaudits to this year’s judges for a difficult job well done; the judges’ service includes carefully reading each newsletter, scoring it, and offering an extensive written criticism which should be of great help to the newsletter editors. Since this contest costs little time for the entrants and is cost-free to them, it is a sterling example of a win-win situation sponsored by PSA.
The number of newsletters entered this year continues a decline which may be the result of more clubs relying solely on their website. The Director would like to remind those clubs that an active effort is required to visit the website and dig out the material of interest, while being sent a newsletter by email directly gives the member an unmissable way to increase knowledge of club activities.
