Nice work to see this action.  I can’t tell who is biting who but I would guess the snake didn’t come out of this to well.  I hope you have a huge number of images of the complete action from beginning to end.  You cropped off the tip of the bird’s tail so be careful of that when photographing long-tailed birds.  Also, you can crop out a lot of the unnecessary parts of the image on the top, bottom and right side.  Also, flip the image horizontally so we see the action first instead of the bird’s back when we enter the image from the left.  See my adjusted image. Good color and exposure, and the bird and snake are acceptably sharp.  Tone down the bright spots where the sky shows through the tree.  Strong nature story.

Also, this image is in the Adobe RGB (1998) color space instead of the sRGB color space, which is the web standard.  Please make sure your images are in sRGB in the future so they will look the same to all of us.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
The description and photo don't match.
Ive critiqued the Osprey picture.
Story is good with the Osprey catching a fish and the head on shot so much better that the all too often shot of the osprey heading away from the photographer

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The settings must refer to the other image as the shutter speed is far too low to capture this image.
The Osprey looks over sharpened. DOF is good.

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Pictorially a good image well composed and has impact.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
Interesting nature shot of the magpie catching the snake.

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
In focus and good separation from the background. The bright leaves in the background are distracting.

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The eye is about dead center which is not the best location for the focal point. I'd crop it so that the eye is more on the third. I think you could go tighter on the crop. The super bright trees and background detract from this image. However, it is a very interesting and unusual subject.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
Image has a clear story of the fight between the magpie and the snake.

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Sharp, good DOF and well exposed. The darkening of the light in the background has been over processed and looks unnatural. Considering the strong light you've done well to recover some detail in the bird.

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The composition is unbalanced. Its difficult because of your viewpoint being below the action and the strong backlight. Crop some of the lower section. The image does have impact. Pity about cropping off the tai l.

Bird's eye nice and clear. Good colour although lacks a little feather detail.

MAY 2020 ROUND
Title:     Bathing

Goal:    I was trying to catch the blue magpie bathing with slow shutter speed. The wagged tails and water splashes blurred with motion, moreover, the running water in little waterfall. Taking bird with long exposure is pretty challenging, first, the bird moves fast and stays only few seconds, it is hard to balance the speed and sharpness.

I used a tripod, speed 1/80, F14, ISO 100. The focal lens is 600mm since I did not want to disturb the bird.

You did a great job of keeping the beak and eye sharp while the rest of the bird is moving.  There is simply too much distracting stuff on the left that can be cropped out, and the bright background should be toned down and cropped also.  See my adjusted image.  The bird is nicely colored so it needs to be the center of attention instead of all the bright water and vegetation all around.  The exposure is right on.  Good work. The bathing bird is a nice nature story.  The image is in the Adobe RGB (1998) color space and needs to be in the sRGB color space because it is the web standard, which makes sure we will all see the same colors.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
The storyline of a bird taking a bath is well depicted by the image. The use of a slower shutter speed worked well to convey the concept of movement. It is a story that is not often shown and that improves interest.

SCORE N (Nature) 3-nature story strong

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Your indicated story line of a bird bathing leaves me unsettled with the final image. If the story line is the bird taking a bath then I feel that the environment plays a role in the story. In this image, other than the bird’s head, everything is blurred. I have searched the image an d I can& rsquo;t find any other thing that is sharp. Using an aperture of f14 you should have some DOF so that some portion of the image is sharp. I understand the motion of the bird who is shaking, and the movement of the falling water but something else should be sharp. I am not concerned about the background be blurred but the area where the bird sit should display some degree of sharpness.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 2-Average exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
In terms of composition the bird is somewhat off center and that is a strong point. I do find the bright spot created by the waterfall in the background to be distracting.
Since it is not part of the story it does not need to be there at all. As I noted in the technical section the image, at least for me, suffers from a lack of sharpness. The falling water in the foreground, would be pretty in a landscape image but since the bird is the subject the brightness of the water takes attention away from the bird. I would suggest cropping at least 2/3 of that foreground water from the image. This would bring more attention to the bird as it would make the bird larger in the frame. Of course you indicate that you cropped the image and I do not know how extreme the crop is, so maybe you cannot crop more with out degrading the entire image.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
wonderful action image of nature

SCORE N (Nature) 3-nature story strong

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
I would not have believe that you could catch the bird's head so sharpely at the slow shutter speed - wll done and beautiful; my only concerns are: (1) bright white in upper left corner was distracting and could have been cropped out; and (2) while the colors of the scene are very pretty, they take away my attention to the bird and the fact that you caught it bathing and shaking off the water.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 2- Average exposure color balance and sharpness

monumental! caught the head of bird still while the rest of its body was moving; also slow shutter made the waterfall pretty

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
This is a lovely image of this magpie bathing. I love the motion of the bird and the water.

SCORE N (Nature) 3-nature story strong

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
You set yourself a difficult task trying to get a motion blur of the bird in this environment. Good for you for trying. I like to create IB's as well. The color balance seems good. In my opinion there is a little too much DoF. The busy background distracts from the bird and I think would be less distracting if it were more out of focus. I'm impressed that even though you used the slower shutter speed, you managed to maintain some sharpness in the birds eye.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 2-Average exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
I love the colors of the the leaves in the water which I think add a nice touch. Although the bird is the subject, it is relatively small in the frame so I would have enjoyed some cropping to make the bird more prominent and show off that water movement. Also, because there are many elements in the image that are brighter from the bird, they detract from the bird as the subject.

Nicely captured bathing activity and the motion of the wings stands out against the stillness of the tail. In development, however, the colors come out over-saturated and hence detract from the nature story.

Nice try! I imagine this is the challenging attempt. Admire your spirit. You capture the moment. I enjoy the color balance, red vs green, blue vs orange. Splash movement is well described. I would crop right hand side aggressively and leave space more on left hand side.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
Strong nature story of bathing by a bird. This captured the moment.

It has so many things on one plate. Although you captured the excellent moment, the image has so many attractions, which takes away the impact. I guess cropping would partially solve the issues. But beautiful image overall.
