Review by commentator Tom S.
The main subject, the flapping duck, is sharp and well positioned off center in the frame, but there are several problems with this image. The partial ducks on both sides are a distraction, but can be cropped out easily. However, the duck behind the flapping duck is a huge distraction. In the future, wait until nothing is behind the subject so there are no distractions. The flapping is normal bird behavior and a weak nature story. The color is good, and the exposure is good.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
One of the things I have learned since joining this forum is that before taking a photo I intend to submit I have to be certain that it contains a clear and powerful NATURE STORY LINE. This story line has to be more than just being there, or doing ordinary activities. The image you submit show a goose flapping its wings. This activity does not constitute a clear and powerful NATURE STORY LINE. If the bird was carrying food, chasing another bird away from its territory, building a nest or some other such activity then you would be approaching a nature story line. I would suggest looking for some compelling behavior to full this requirement.

SCORE N (Nature) 1-Nature story minimal or contains unrelated hand of man

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
When reviewing the technical merits of this image I would first question your camera settings. While you have a fast enough shutter to stop the action, you also have a higher aperture of f8 along with a semi high ISO. The ISO I can attribute to the relatively low light level of the scene. However you subject is lost among the flock of geese shown throughout the image. By making the aperture lower, perhaps f4 it would allow you to either lower the ISO to maybe 400 or raise the shutter speed to maybe 1/2000. If you then focus carefully on the goose with the open wings it would have the effect of blurring the background to a greater degree and thus helping to isolate your subject in a more dynamic manner. This is what is meant by using Depth of Field to your advantage.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 2-Average exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
From a purely visual standpoint the image fails to present a clear and dynamic subject. The flapping goose simply does not stand out (see the comments above). Additionally your subject goose is on the right side of the frame and moving toward being out of the frame completely. You should allow space for your subject to move forward in the frame by not placing it facing an edge.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
Portait of a group of ducks/geese? on ice.

SCORE N (Nature) 2-Nature story of average strength (portrait

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Closest bird is in good focus, while more distant birds are not in focus, good overall exposure

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 2-Average exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
There are too many birds in this photo. You may want to try to isolate an individual bird, or a small group of birds. Having so many birds in the background overlaping each other is distracting. The angle of the ice is also distracting. leveling the ice might be helpful.

SCORE P (Pictorial Quality) 1-Inadequate composition and impact

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
I think that your nature story may be the feather drying after a swim or landing?
I don’t understand how “acting alone” applies to this image with the number of birds in the photograph.

SCORE N (Nature) 2-Nature story of average strength (portrait

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The exposure and general processing are acceptable. You seemed to have focused on the bird at the front with the remaining birds falling out of focus at varying degrees. A close crop featuring the foreground bird would be less distracting.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 2-Average exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The photograph lacks focus without a clear center of attention. There are too many slightly out of focus birds cluttering the background and creating a distraction. It might have worked of the background birds were more out of focus.

interesting capture, would look for something more recent than 2013 to improve on the capture.

adequate, but would suggest tighter crop to high light the subject's action, vs those around it.
