SEPTEMBER 2019 ROUND
Title:   Sisters Bonding

Goal:   I often visit my local zoo and never see the lions doing anything but sleeping. I was determined to get a shot at my recent visit as they were the most active I have seen them. I notice the standing Lioness moving towards her sister and was lucky enough to capture this greeting / bonding behaviour of them butting heads/licking each other.

Review by commentator Tom S.

Very nice angle with the puffin coming toward you with dinner for the babies.  It is amazing that they can catch so many little fish at the same time.  The head and most of the body is sharp but the rear of the bird and feet are at the back end of the depth of field and slightly soft.  Also, I feel it is a little dark and needs to be brightened without blowing out the highlights.  I put the image in Photoshop and corrected it in levels and sharpened the tail and feet slightly and flipped to so it is facing to the left.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
This image is a fine capture of a Puffin carrying sand eel for its meal. The dramatic position of the wings and the beak full of eels create a powerful storyline. The presentation with its almost perfectly clean background makes for a quality image.

SCORE N (Nature) 3-nature story strong

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Exposure and camera settings are more than adequate. In my opinion the slight blur of the wing tips adds to the image rather than detracting as it shows motion. You have no blown whites and have created almost a perfect background.. I find the background this month a bit more cluttered than the one you presented last month, but not enough to create a deduction. The image suffers from a slight lack of DOF throughout the body of the bird. On the other hand you have captured a strong eye contact between the viewer and the bird. For me this offsets the slight loss of DOF.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 3-Excellent exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Between the two images you have shown in the last two months I like this one better. It has some loss of DOF and a bit more of a cluttered background but for me the powerful eye contact and the expression on the bird’s face make this the better image. In wildlife photography capturing the eye is one of the most powerful techniques that can be presented. For me—The Eyes Have It.

You have presented another fine image.

sharp image around head, eyes, captured fishes. I'm amazed that even at 1/1250 wing still show movement. thought would more or less stationary just glide in. but fine, shows actions.

I started out with my photography as a teenager. I studied photography at school shooting with a fully manual camera and doing all my own processing of my B&W images in my school dark room.   Once I left school I only dabbled in photography as I had lost access to the dark room so my photography took a back seat whilst work took over.

In 2009 my Daughter went to University and when inquiring what I was going to do with all my spare time I was told "Get a hobby Dad" so I went out and bought my first digital SLR.  From the first time i looked at my images on the back of my camera I was hooked.

I am a get it right in camera kinda guy who shoots all types of images from wildlife to landscape and street to portraiture trying to deliver quality natural images with very little editing.

I live close to London which makes it difficult to get access to exotic wildlife, but I do my best in the country I live in.

As a photographer I felt I wanted some goals to aim for so completed my LRPS. my CPAGB and started entering the British Photographic Exhibitions and have recently achieved my BPE2* (50 accepted entries) and am well on the way to achieving my BPE3 (100 Accepted)

I recently (November 2018) started my FIAP and PSA journey and am very pleased with my progress so far having already won various medals and my proudest moment winning the FIAP blue badge for 23/24 acceptances in a recent salon.
