Image Discussion Groups, IDG, replaced the previous Photo Travel Division study groups for 2021.  These study groups are based on software similar to the Projected Image Division, PID Digital Dialogue study groups.  There are up to seven members of a group with one designated as the group Administrator.  Prior to the 10th of each month members post one image with information about how it was taken.   Members of the group join the monthly discussion of each image in the group.  Members of other IDG groups may also join in the discussion.  Others can find these groups from the PSA webpage, but they cannot post anything.   Images and discussion from previous months are also available on the group’s website for review and learning and perhaps inspiration for your own travel photography. Members can expect to improve their travel photography as well as support the learning process of the other members.  The groups typically include members with a range of experience in travel photography.

The PTD study groups are based on images that meet the PTD definition used for competitions.  You can review information on this definition along with supporting educational material on the PTD overview page

You can click the following link to experience the PTD Image Discussion Groups.  When you are at the site, feel free to click the links at the top of the page to learn more about the IDG study groups.  You can also click to go to previous months or to other groups. If you are interested in joining a group, please contact Laurie Friedman; her email address is at the top of this page.

  • Photo Travel Definition

» Photo Travel Definition: A Photo Travel image expresses the characteristic features or culture of a land as they are found naturally. There are no geographic limitations. Images from events or activities arranged specifically for photography, or of subjects directed or hired for photography are not permitted. Close up pictures of people or objects must include features that provide information about the location.

Techniques that add, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. The only allowable adjustments are removal of dust or digital noise, restoration of the appearance of the original scene and complete conversion to greyscale monochrome. Other derivations, including infrared, are not permitted. All images must look natural.

The Photo Travel Division has produced a Guide for Chairs and Judges.  It is vital that these guides are issued to judges, and that Chairs of Exhibitions/Competitions ensure that all judges have read the guides and understand them. The guides (translated into several languages) can be found below or on the home page of the Photo Travel Division. https://psa-photo.org/index.php?divisions-photo-travel
