Review by commentator Dan C.

Your image is well done and has a strong nature story.  It is both challenging and fun finding mating insects and this pair of leaf beetles on a dayflower was a good find. Having them mating also helps in getting the shot since they are not so prone to taking off when you carefully approach.

Technically the exposure is good.  The beetles are very sharp and I have no problems with the fall off of sharpness on the dayflower.  That helps focus the viewer on the action.

Pictorially your composition is good and the main subjects are well isolated.  Since there is no information in the background that adds to your nature story I see no reason not to crop tighter and resize.  This helps make the action more dominant in the image area.  My suggestion to crop is not enough to knock of  a pictorial point but it did stop me from adding the Exceptional point.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
First, I would like to note that you appear to be a quick study as many of the suggestion provided to you last month seem to be employed in the capture of this image.

The action of the image showing the mating process of these beetles provides a strong nature story line and a bit of drama included. This is well done.

SCORE N (Nature) 3-nature story strong

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The angle of view and the introduction of the speed light make this quite an exceptional image. You have managed to capture the beetles quite well as they are sharp and clear. The f8 setting worked well. While some may feel that the DOF is too shallow the fact that the flower is blurred I feel simply draws attention to the beetles and they are the subjects. Your setting and angle have allowed for a seamless background that also enhances the focus of the viewer on the beetles.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 3-Excellent exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The somewhat centered position of the subject is not objectionable as the curve of the flower gives the illusion of following the rule of thirds. The one aspect of the image that I find out of place is the yellow flower showing behind the beetles. I think this would be a stronger image without the addition of that yellow flower. This may have been solved by you physically being slightly lower and to the right.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
Excellent image of live beetle activity

SCORE N (Nature) 3-nature story strong

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The beetles are very sharp. The exposure is beautiful but the depth of field holds back my praise - it is too shallow and also contrasty. Considering that you used a flash you should be able to use a smaller aperture. Additionally you try to use a stacking procedure to increase your depth of field

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
Hi Prasad! Well captured! Clear story here! Well done.

SCORE N (Nature) 3-nature story strong

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
You are materially at right angles to the two insects, helping to keep much of both of them in focus. f8 won't deliver a very wide DOF and I do wonder whether a different setting would have helped here, even if this resulted in a darker image at capture which can easily be brought back in processing.
I conclude though you have enough of the insects in focus in this instance.
I do find the strong yellow behind the left insect distracting. I appreciate that you were stuck with that, but I suggest you consider doing some local adjustments to make this area greener or certainly less bright yellow.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 2-Average exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Having deducted a point for the yellow within technical, I cant again here, but the yellow certainly for me affects my pleasure from you fine image

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
the right subject approached wrongly would be my opinion. please always try to remember the added advantage of using a tripod. mount your cam on a tripod and compose the shot before taking it. don't worry it'll give you time. I know as I have been in many such situations. go manual with your lens and exposure. duck at the same level of the mating pair and try to get the best depth of focus before applying the depth of field. if possible use MAGMOD flash system attched to your existing flash system, which would give you ample light and the colour grains wouldn't so hard as it seems now.

SCORE N (Nature) 2-Nature story of average strength (portrait

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
although you tried hard but lack of technical know how let you down. in the head antenna is unsharp beyond recognition and in the background the mating drops are way too un-sharp.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 1-Inadequate exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
more of a portrait whereas it should be very good nature image a judge would aspire to award. drop down and survey from all around to get a good summary of the fact that from which angle it would look best.

I like the blurring of the background, however, the Yellow was distracting; I also would have cropped the bottom more to get a larger view of the beetles.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
Mating has surely one of the strongest nature stories.

SCORE N (Nature) 3-nature story strong

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
One beetle has sharp eye and the other not. DOF is too narrow.
Flash make visible shadows on the flower and reflexes on the beetle.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 2-Average exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The beetles are too central. I would crop on the bottom and on both sides to get more diagonal composition beginning on bottom left third. Yellow part of flower is too strong. I suggest to low saturation of it and darken it.
