Title:
Wooing the ladies

Goal:   To capture a wren singing to the ladies

Equipment/Source:     Nikon D7000
120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens @ 400mm
1/2000s @ f8
ISO2000
Handheld

Technique:   I spent quite a bit of time stalking this young male in the hopes of catching him entertaining the ladies. It took quite awhile and lots of patience. Even then I couldn't get a clear shot as there was a lot of branches to shoot through. This was the best of the day.

Processing:
Cropping, some exposure adjustments and detail sharpening.

Nice capture of this birds mating activities.  He is very sharp and there is a catch light in his eye.  The exposure and colors are good.  Good work.  Too bad the bright, out-of-focus branch is in the way.  That kills the value of the image because it is a huge distraction.  Removing a lot of it by cropping from the left and putting the bird’s eye on the left third of the image plus darkening the branch helps a lot but it is still a distraction.  The only solution is to find another image without any out of focus stuff in the foreground.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
This handsome fella singing to the ladies I feel remains a fine portrait of his species. For me this does not, in and of itself raise the nature story of the image beyond average. I’ve read the new guidelines that have been suggested and wrestled with this for quite a while, but for me this open beak action remains as average bird behavior. I will be interested how others interpret this in light of the new guidelines. If I’m too harsh, I apologize.

SCORE N (Nature) 2-Nature story of average strength (portrait

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The three basic camera adjustments appear adequate for this capture. You did a good job in securing a background that is relatively free of distractions. I do like your angle of view which places the viewer at approximately eye level with the subject. However, the bright, even though blurred branch between the camera and the subject is a great distraction.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 2-Average exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Given that your capture has a distracting branch in the foreground, which cannot be removed without cropping the bird’s feet, you have limited options. I would crop off from the left edge at least up to the end of the dark branch. While that will not solve the entire problem it will reduce the bright branch. It will also remove much of the light and bright clutter in the upper left corner. It will not solve the problem, but it will reduce it. I would also encourage you to be more aware of the birds feet when shooting, as you cut part of them off. I realize this is difficult with active subjects but it is something to be aware of.

Note: I realize things happen fast in the field but keeping the eye not on the view finder open might help to spot these branches that end up between the camera and the subject.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
Nice photo of a singing wren. this is more of a portrait even though bird is singing.

SCORE N (Nature) 2-Nature story of average strength (portrait

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The bird is sharp, and eye is in focus with light on the eye. There are some exposure concerns, some of the darks are under exposed and show no detail, some area of the photo were a little bright and could use a little darkening.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 2-Average exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The main area of the bird is good. However the branch coming across the bottom of the frame is very distracting. A little darkening could help, but I think that it would still be an issue. I think that some of the left side could be cropped out, and this may help with some of the brighter area on the left and the branch on the bottom.

NOVEMBER 2019 ROUND
Title:    Golden Dawn

Goal:    To photograph the rocks as the first rays of sun hit them. At this particular spot they are known for changing to an Orange colour - but this only happens during the first light of day.

Equipment/Source:    Nikon D7000  10-20mm f/4.0-5.6 lens @ 10mm  Tripod  Graduated Filter ISO 100 1sec @ f/11

Technique:    I used a 1 second exposure to ensure that the sea had a hint of silkiness to it which counteracts the sharp angles in the rocks. Using a tripod I tried several angles over the 1/2 hour to find the most appealing. I like that there is a hint of rocks under the water. This hangs as a 30" x 40" framed picture in my house - a favourite of mine.

Processing:   Cropping, Colour balance, contrast, tonal balance, brightening

Review by commentator Dan C.

You managed to capture a scenic nature shot that does have decent story value.  Unfortunately you also managed to capture a nature scenic that includes buildings on the top of the cliff.  That is no reason for this image not to be a favorite but it is a reason not to consider it nature.

Technically your exposure and lighting are excellent.  You have good depth of field from the foreground rocks to the horizon.  I am glad you resisted the urge to increase the saturation.

Pictorially all the elements work well together.  Your choice to use a slow shutter gave you nice balance between silky foreground water while maintaining the offshore waves.  I also agree with your use of the rocks below the water level in the foreground.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
This is a strong landscape image, beautiful complementary colors, with the blue water and sky, and yellow-orange rocks. Nice clouds. I agree with your choice of shutter speed for the water, for it has a nice timeless feel with the one-second shutter setting. For nature competition, you need to focus on the geological aspects of the image rather than the pictorial values. It’s the geological story that’s the real nature story. Without the geological aspects empathized, this image would work better for a pictorial club competition.

SCORE N (Nature) 2-Nature story of average strength (portrait

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Technical aspects handle well. Great use of a graduated neutral density filter.

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 3-Excellent exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Excellent portion of sky to land; the horizon is kept out of the middle. Post-processing techniques of cropping, contrast, tonal balance, and brightening are subtle and not noticeable to the viewer. Excellent overall composition with the shoreline rocks leading out to the ocean waves and the extended coastline.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
Sylvia, this is a stunning image captured at the best time of the day to bring out lovely colours in the rocks. A clear nature story.

Good technique with use of graduated filter and depth of field with f11. Your position when takeking the shot was perfect, with great lead in lines from the left as well as the marks in the rocks on the right all taking the eye forward into the shot. Lovely control of the sky and water colours.

NATURE REVIEW OF THE IMAGE
First let me note this is a quite stunning landscape image and I can see why you have framed a 30x40 print.

While I greatly admire the image I struggle to latch onto a nature storyline other than simply the eroding rocks from the sea action. It is something I struggle with every month as many of my landscapes just don’t have convincing nature storylines.

SCORE N (Nature) 2-Nature story of average strength (portrait

TECHNICAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
Your selection of the time of day and the angle of view have created a dramatic scene. Even you lens selection works well to emphasize the foreground. The use of the graduated filter to control the brightness of the sky makes this image possible. I also like that you the not excessively blur the water

SCORE T (Technical Quality) 3-Excellent exposure color balance and sharpness

PICTORIAL REVIEW OF IMAGE
The composition fits the image well and I like the elongated format. You have good leading lines from the rocks and the water leading to the sunrise. Color and saturation are not overdone. If this were mine I would crop some of the rocks on the right side as the images feels like it has two subjects—the sky and the rocks. While I understand that the rocks and their color is important to the image, perhaps bringing their brightness down a bit would move the attention back to the sunrise and the water.
